MBIE, 15 Stout Street

The 15 Stout St redevelopment is one involving one of our city’s most iconic buildings. Constructed in the art moderne style, many Wellingtonians consider it a favourite, with bold granite cladding and curved bronze corner windows. McKee Fehl have completed a $40m redevelopment of this piece of Wellington history.

The glazed internal atrium is one of the key elements of the buildings composition, allowing visual connection between floors and offering sea views to the upper storeys. The atrium features acoustic panels made from damaged timber taken from the existing roof structure. The ground floor holds a variety of meeting and conference rooms along with a public cafe and is a key space for social and collaborative work.

BlackYARD Engineering (then Pacific Consultants), were responsible for both base build and MBIE tenant fitout Electrical Services.

15 Stout Street is a Gold winner at the 2015 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards and is the recipient of the National Award in Restoration category. The project has also won a Local NZIA Architecture Award. The project was the category winner for the Green Building Award from the NZ Property Council. 15 Stout St was also the recipient of two Excellence awards in Commercial and Heritage and Adaptive Reuse categories.
